The Red Flag Exercises are opportunities for pilots to receive advanced training, working with pilots from different service branches and different nations. The Addition to the Red Flag building delivers high tech training facilities and gathering areas to further enrich exercise events by providing space that promotes interaction and collaboration. A new building Entry and Lobby establish a high-tech aesthetic through the generous use of glazing and high ceilings. A large, 396-seat auditorium and two smaller auditoriums function as professional gathering areas critical to the Red Flag Exercise.
The addition emphasizes security measures needed for the Exercise activities. Most of the building perimeter is a concrete masonry wall. The concrete masonry (CMU) provides acoustic privacy and protection from blast, as well as structural support. Varying colors and textures of CMU enhance the building’s aesthetic and relates the building to other nearby buildings using the same construction.

Using a robust building envelope, efficient mechanical systems and LED lighting, the Red Flag Addition will achieve reduced energy bills. The design targets 30% savings from the energy use of a similar building of typical construction. Vertical architectural mesh screens and horizontal window sunshades protect the building from the harsh Nevada sun to help keep the interior cool. The CMU exterior provides a passive cooling strategy by absorbing solar radiation during the day and releasing the heat energy at night.
