Buildings have long served as sacred places where people can commune with the spiritual. Temples, Synagogues, Mosques and Churches – or, in the case of the North Fort Chapel, all in one – provide settings for strengthening social bonds and building community. These structures help us make connections with each other as well as connections with a higher power. The challenge, though, is overcoming the divisions that can form when different faiths factionalize.

The solution at the North Fort Chapel is to balance the functional needs of each faith with the goal to make the most neutral space possible, avoiding some of the architectural themes that may be construed as promoting one faith over others. In a sense, the result is an incubator for a super-community, a place that forces an intersection between belief systems resulting in common ground. The North Fort Chapel is a statement of hope that our divisions unite us.
