Perched on a hill among tall Douglas Firs and Big Leaf Maples, the Bremerton Apartment Complex looks out toward the Sinclair Inlet. Despite the ferries, the shipyard activity and area car traffic, the complex is a haven of quiet, at home among the Puget Sound eagles. The apartment complex is a wonder of site planning: the building snakes between trees, roadways, a water tower, and another apartment building. The building’s two wings embrace a plaza at its entrance where residents can gather and enjoy perfect summer days. The plaza is a versatile setting, featuring benches and covered picnic tables, with a basketball court and skateboard park tucked in corners.
Brick, concrete masonry, metal panels and glass are composed in a traditional base, middle and top composition, sprinkled with gables, altogether reminiscent of what home looks like, except on a bigger scale. Gray metal roofing blends in with the overcast Pacific Northwest sky, while red brick and white panels recall the older structures nearby. Interior lounges and fitness areas invite residents inside when winter weather shoos them from the plaza: building community is a year-round activity. When it’s time for residents to escape to their rooms, the apartments strike a balance between cozy and plenty of legroom, and offer views back out to the firs and maples and the eagles flying among them.
