Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti is the only permanent US Military Base on the African continent. It only recently began its transition from portable and temporary structures to a more fully developed campus of lasting concrete, steel and brick facilities. Some of the recent projects there include a Dining Facility, a Headquarters Administrative Building and a Fitness Center. These structures, and the new Bachelor Quarters under this project, demonstrate U.S. commitment in the Horn of Africa.

This dormitory is the first of its kind at Camp Lemonnier and will set a precedent for future dormitory development. As the Camp starts to build up its permanent structures, master planning and architectural continuity become increasingly important. The architectural theme for this project was chosen to reflect the historical local architecture. The façade is broken up both horizontally and vertically creating individual building blocks that reflect the traditional width to height proportions of structures in the area. The design for the barracks vertically modulates the exterior facades to minimize the building’s linear appearance and to create courtyards between adjacent buildings. These shaded courtyards provide welcomed relief from the severe climate. Large, freestanding, arched colonnades are provided at the main entry and at exterior covered patios. They highlight focal points on the building’s exterior and allude to the traditional Moorish architecture. At entry points, the arch is open for passage, while at protected patio areas, the arch is infilled with a partial height wall and traditional decorative metal lattices.
